The Salem Girls’ Boarding School was founded in 1804 and was initially housed in the Single Sisters’ House.  The building depicted in this lithograph was constructed in 1805 due to the success and rapid growth of the school.  Grunewald also created a view of the Moravian Young Ladies Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  An 1845 church manuscript records a price of 50 cents for Grunewald’s “Views of church and school” and $1.00 for “Views of Salem.”
