Grunewald would have completed watercolors in preparation for printing lithographs.  A watercolor of this scene still survives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  While the corner of the Boys’ School is visible on the lower left, the focus of this view is the home and office of the inspector of the Salem Girls’ Boarding School and the church behind it.  Notice the entrance to the town square and the protective enclosures around each young tree lining the street on the left.
