Cann
This cann is the earliest known example of Southern armorial silver. It is engraved with the coat of arms of Dr. John Hutchinson (d.1729) of Charleston, South Carolina. When Dr. Hutchinson died his estate contained more than £700 worth of silver. This cann, with its elaborate engraving, would have made his wealth and English lineage apparent to everyone around him.
