This print is based on a painting or drawing by Joshua Shaw. Shaw was born in England in 1777, came to Philadelphia in 1817, and traveled throughout the South making sketches and taking subscription for a series of American views.
RELATED WORKS: From the same series: “Burning of Savannah” (MESDA 2057), “Bolling’s Dam” (MESDA 2081.1), “Lynnhaven Bay” (MESDA 2279.1), “Spirit Creek” (MESDA 2279.2), “Spirit Creek” (MESDA 3045), “Jones Falls” (MESDA 3227)
DESCRIPTION: Hand tinted aquatint. Trees are in the foreground, and a sunken dock sticks up partially out of the water. Sea gulls fly around over the water and land. A building with flags stands to the left across the water. Boats are attached to the dock at this building. Two sailing boats travel away from the shore and the foreground. One is visible with a side view, the other from behind. Across the bay in the distance are white buildings with red roofs.
