Description
This 1768 plat was drawn by the colonial South Carolina surveyor Philip Pearson (1746-1835) to accompany a land grant given to Michael Rider for 100 acres on the Congaree River, near present-day Columbia. Pearson served as the first clerk of court and justice of the peace for Richland County, South Carolina, and is reputed to have laid out the city of Columbia. In addition to the map of Rider’s 100 acres, the plat is distinguished by its elaborate red and blue compass rose and Pearson’s depiction of surveyor’s instruments.
