MAKER: Nancy Moore Strayhorn was born in 1814 to Samuel Strayhorn (1786-1847) and Mary Capper (Moore) Strayhorn (1794-1844) in Orange County, North Carolina. She married David Craig (1810-1893) in 1835. The dressing table cover was made after her marriage as it includes her new monogram and the date 1836. She died in 1889 and is buried at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Orange County, North Carolina.

DESCRIPTION: Cloth ground has the initials “NMC / A 2 D / 1836” cross stitched in gold thread in center. Long fringe around 3 sides.

RELATED OBJECTS: A whitework embroidered coverlet which is in the MESDA Collection (acc.3053) was made by her sister, Emeline Moore Strayhorn (1823-1908) and includes the initials “EMS”. It would date before her 1842 marriage to James Newton Craig (1816-1879).

Another whitework dressing table cover made by Nancy Moore Strayhorn is in the collection of Colonial Williamsburg (acc. 1999-224). It is inscribed “Nancy M. Strayhorn. Born July 31, 1814” and “July 31, 1828).
