Description
Alkaline-glazed stoneware jar with lug handles and tooled shoulder. On both faces of the vessel, the maker used iron slip to brush on a flower, stem, and two abstract leaves; a white slip trailing was applied as an accent color. The decoration was brushed on before the alkaline glaze was applied. This jar has a rim with an angled underside; the rim’s design allowed for covering the jar with a cloth and tying it off after filling it with potted meat, pickled meat, or pickled vegetables.
