Description:
Earthenware storage jar with thick lead and iron oxide glaze, incised decoration and inscription.

INSCRIPTION: “This is the Property of my own make by J. Henkel Ser. July 11–th, 1839 for Mrss. Spigle of Botetourt County Virginia” “Cookie jar” “look out sir”

MAKER: Jesse Henkel (1796-after 1860) was born in Maryland, possibly around Hagerstown, and first appeared in the 1840 Botetourt County, Virginia census, listed as a manufacturer or tradesmen. In 1850, he is listed specifically as a potter.

History:
Descended in the Spigel family of Botetourt Co., Virginia. Said to have been made by the potter Jesse Henkel (1796-after 1860) for Mrs. Anna Spigel, the mother of Philip Spigel who apprenticed under Henkel. A crock (3254.2) reputed to have been made by Spigel descended in the same family.
