Description
Large, eight-gallon alkaline-glazed stoneware jar attributed to James Long or John Beacham of Crawford County, Georgia. Thinly potted ovoid vessel with flaring rim and arched lug handles. Thick, colorful rivulets of alkaline glaze flow down the walls of the jar.
This jar with has what is known as a “paint rock” alkaline-glaze. This regional twist on an alkaline glaze incorporates ground limonite nodules into the standard mixture of wood ash or lime, clay, water, and sand. When fired, it develops a vibrant spectrum of colors.
