HISTORY: This piece was found in Hertford County in northeastern North Carolina, and it is believed to have been drawn in that area. The method of writing the date (“6th mo.” instead of “June”) indicates that the artist may have been a Quaker and perhaps a member of one of the nearby Quaker meetings such as Rich Square in Northampton County, North Carolina, or Western Branch in Southampton County, Virginia .
