History
Descended in the family at Sabine Hall to the current owners.
Subjects
Mrs. Landon Carter nee Maria Byrd. __Supposedly the daughter of William Byrd II. Landon Carter was the builder of “Sabine Hall.” __Compare this portrait with the Charles Bridges version on deposit at the College of William and Mary. This is probably a later copy, possibly by William Dering. See VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY, VF 8-4, p. 22. and Hood, Graham, CHARLES BRIDGES AND WILLIAM DERNG, p. 114.
