William Roberts recorded a variety of picturesque scenery on his 1803-1804 journey through Virginia. This aquatint depicts a scene on the upper Potomac River, probably near its junction with the Shenandoah River at Harper’s Ferry.

DESCRIPTION: Aquatint on paper, “View on the Potomac, Virginia.” Landscape scene of river.

INSCRIPTION: Watermarked paper: “J. WHATMAN/ 1808.” Matting is inscribed on left: “Drawn by W. Roberts, Esq.” Matting is inscribed on right: “Engraved by J. Jeakes.” Below the caption, is another inscription stating: “Published by Mssrs. Colnaghi and Co./ Cokspur [Cockspur] Street, London 1st March 1810.” On the back: “Mr. Burton/ 91 Glocester Place/ Por_.”

Descended in the family of the artist, William Roberts, to his daughter Grace (Roberts) Burton, to her son Sir Charles Burton.
