Johnston, Mary Christmas
Warren County North Carolina United States of America
Needlework picture. Satin stitch and outline stitch. Orginal colors were mainly green, gold, and brown. Considerably faded. Outdoor scene with lake and figures in foreground, houses and trees in background.
SOURCE: The picture probably has a print source of English origin based on the style of architecture depicted. Note the leaded glass windows on the far right suggesting a school or public assembly room.
Attributed to Mary Christmas Johnston (1793-1858) based on family history. She was the daughter of planter Hugh Johnston (1762-1810) and his wife Sarah (Green) Johnston (1774-1848) of Largo plantation in Warren County, North Carolina. She later married William Green Jones (1791-1845) and lived at Kinderhook Plantation in Warren County. A walnut china press that belonged to her parents is also in the MESDA Collection (MESDA Acc. 4128).
