MAKER: Mary Jane Scott was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia in 1814 to Thomas Osborne Scott (1775-1837) and Jane Haskins (1781-1856). She married Branch Osborne Scott (1800-1862) in 1828 and they had thirteen children. She died in 1879 at the age of 64.

DESCRIPTION: Ornamental embroidery using silk and chenille thread on a silk ground fabric with parts painted with watercolor. Colors mostly blues, greens and golds. Large urn and monument on left. A woman in a neoclassical pose with an arm lifted upward, seated under a tree on right. Ornamental embroidery was a popular exercise for accomplished young girls, typically taught in academies.
