DESCRIPTION: Cast Iron fireback marked “Keep Triste” and dated 1769. Decorated with C and S scrolls, an eight pointed star, and a stag’s head.

DATE: The fireback is the only known casting from the early period of the furnace’s operation.

DESIGN: The 8-point, or Byzantine sun-star, symbolized a sun in medieval Europe;, it was retained by Pennsylvania Germans, and appears on objects from quilts to gravestones.
