Door knob with reproduction back plate
“Door lock fittings; particularly knobs, were often cast of brass; John Vogler almost certainly made the cast brass hand clutching a staff (4-10) which, with its engraved backplate, was used on the front door and interior door of his 1819 dwelling. Similar ‘hand’ knobs were in use in Germany during the same period. ” MORAVIAN DECORATIVE ARTS IN NORTH CAROLINA. John Bivins, Jr. and Paula Welshimer. 1981. Page 68.
The hand holding the rob (or staff) may symbolize man holding on to God’s authority or comfort as in Psalm 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
