This cupboard is probably typical of the joiner-made furniture build fr small planters’ homes of the period. The fielded panel, style of the wrought butterfly hinges, and bunn feet suggest a date in the early 18th century. Based on its limited provenance, it is likely that the piece was made in southeastern Virginia or northeastern North Carolina. The hinges may reflect the work of a local blacksmith.

DESCRIPTION: Cupboard with a single outset-panel door hinged with butterfly hinges. Joined construction. Applied molded cornice and base with mitered edges. Bunn feet. Original lock broken.

Acquired before 1965 by Frank L. Horton from Miss Pattie Anderson, a dealer in South Hill, Virginia.
