Description:
This woven overshot coverlet was made around 1850 in Greene County, Georgia at the plantation of Elisha P. Jarrell (1803-1877) and his wife Mary (1811-1906), most likely by enslaved women. Elisha P. Jarrell is listed in 1860 as among a group of the largest slaveholders in Greene County, Georgia. His plantation, named Sunnyside, produced cotton.
History:
This coverlet passed directly through the family line before coming to MESDA: Mary S. Jarrell (1811-1906) to her daughter Mary Jarrell Jernigan (1851-1924), to her son Paul Eve Jernigan (1887-1977), to the donors.
