Candlestick (one of pair)
Birmingham England United Kingdom
HOA: 7 3/4; WOA: 3 7/8
DESCRIPTION: Wide flange at top. Porringer-like base. Baluster can be turned to push socket upwards. Inscript on bottom of base.
STYLE: These sticks are joined in the baluster just above the solid cast base, not through the base as is usual. The baluster can be turned to push the socket upward to facilitate the removal of candles. This is the earliest form of a “push-up” candlestick and follows a French patent of 1730. Later “push-up” sticks operate from a rod with a tab under the base or later by a slotted baluster with tabbed push-up.
