Andirons

Artist/Maker:
Unknown
Place Made:
Gloucester County Virginia United States of America
Date Made:
1710-1730
Medium:
iron
Accession Number:
2526.2 a-b
Description:
DESCRIPTION: Pair of iron andirons.

STYLE: The unusual form and construction of these andirons (specifically the U-shaped feet, with the uprights mortised through and rivetted underneath) belie their early period, as do the hot-chiselled crossing and herringboning used on the uprights and feet. The small hooks welded to the bottom of the uprights may have been for some form of roasting frame, since they seem a little low to receive a roasting spit.
