Thomas Hariot and artist John White were part of Sir Walter Raleigh’s 1585 expedition to what is now the coast of North Carolina. While Raliegh established a settlement at Roanoke Hariot and White ventured out and recorded native live. Hariot’s description of the North Carolina coast, and White’s drawings as translated through the engravings of Theodor de Bry, provided Europeans with some of their first glimpses of native life in what would become the United States.
