September 15-20, 2017 Great Wagon Road

“The Great Wagon Road”

The Study Trip will emphasize the early material culture of the Great Wagon Road that stretched from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania southward to North Carolina. Following in the footsteps of the 2017 MESDA Summer Institute, the travelers will experience the region’s economic, social, and cultural history through visits to museums and private collections as well as lectures on their journey along portions of the Great Wagon Road including areas of southern Pennsylvania; Hagerstown, Maryland, and Winchester, Virginia, as well as Rockingham, Shenandoah, Page, and Augusta counties in the Valley of Virginia.

The MESDA Study Trip is open to members of the Frank L. Horton Society and benefits the MESDA Summer Institute and annual operations.  If you are a member and would like to register for the trip, please contact April Strader Bullin or Catherine Carlisle:
