Wythe County, Virginia
1820-1830
Copper
Old Salem Purchase Fund (2241.15)

Dr. John Haller (1780-1839) of Wytheville, Virginia, owned this small copper still. He also owned a copy of Colin Mackenzie’s Five Thousand Receipts in all the Useful and Domestic Arts, with instructions and recipes for using it.  By distilling surplus fruit and grain, Dr. Haller and his neighbors could convert their crops into easily transportable commodities.
