Punch combined ingredients from across the British Empire: East Indian spices, tropical citrus fruit, sugar from the Caribbean, and alcohol from Europe, Asia, or America. Strainers, like this one made by the Charleston, South Carolina, silversmith Alexander Petrie, removed the pulp from freshly squeezed lime, lemon, or orange juice.
