MUG

Westerwald, Germany
1700-1730
Cobalt-decorated stoneware
HOA: 5 ½”
Gift of Frank L. Horton (2894)

This mug was brought to America by John Michael Zeigler (1696-1756), one of the early Salzburger settlers of Ebeneezer, Georgia. Decorated in a particularly Germanic manner, the mug depicts the Peace of Westphalia, a series of treaties that ended the Thirty-Years and Eighty-Years Wars in Europe. The Peace of Westphalia would have held special significance to Zeigler. It established the principle of private religious freedom. Unfortunately for Zeigler and his fellow Salzburgers, this was a hollow promise. Their emigration to Georgia was brought on by the religious persecution by German Catholics.
