ARMCHAIR

c. 1740 - 1770
Valley of Virginia
Walnut
HOA: 46”, WOA: 22 3/4”
Gift of Frank L. Horton (acc. 2024.15)

For many years this chair has been associated with the German craftsmen who migrated in to the Valley of Virginia from southeastern Pennsylvania.   However, Benno Foreman and Robert Trent have noted an affinity between similar chairs made in southeastern Pennsylvania and others made in Wales.  This chair documents the impact of Pennsylvania chair making traditions, whether German or Welsh, in the Valley of Virginia.
