The hands of individual turners can be read in the posts, rails, stiles, and spindles of turned chairs. This armchair is part of a well-known group from Southside Virginia. The form of its back and arms – with rows of turned spindles – may show the influence of French Huguenot craftsmen who emigrated to the South in large numbers during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
