Turners were innovators who creatively used the tools they had to achieve great artistic effect. The split balusters of this chair were created by gluing two strips of wood together with a thin strip of wood between. After the assembled block was turned, the two identical half-turnings were separated to be used.
This armchair is one of a group – including two at Colonial Williamsburg – that emanated from the area around the town of Bowling Green in Caroline County, Virginia.
