A Land of Liberty and Plenty: Georgia Decorative Arts 1733 - 1860
In 1733 James Edward Oglethorpe set sail for Georgia and founded the last of the Thirteen Colonies. With Oglethorpe were more than one hundred colonists, including Georgia's first craftsmen. Over the next century, Georgia's population grew to include a diverse mix of European peoples drawn to her fertile lands, as well as Africans brought against their wills to power an emerging plantation economy. Native Americans, who had been in Georgia for millennia, were gradually displaced westward. All of these peoples, African, European, and Native American shaped the decorative arts of Georgia.
This exhibition is on view October 1, 2009 through October 2, 2010 in the G. Wilson Douglas, Jr. Gallery of the Frank L. Horton Museum Center. Admission to Douglas Gallery exhibitions at MESDA is free of charge.
