In addition to their philanthropic goals, Georgia's founders also wanted their colony to make money.  In 1736, the colony encouraged Andrew Duché to establish its first pottery.  Duché was the son of a Philadelphia potter of French Huguenot descent.  In Savannah, Duché made utilitarian earthenware – like this pot stamped with his initials – and experimented with the local kaolin clays in an effort of make porcelain.
