Description
Wheel thrown and made of red earthenware clay, this bowl is elaborately decorated on the inside with an intricate slip pattern. Thin, horizontal dark manganese lines were applied close to one another on the inside wall of the bowl. Green and white slip was then dropped in evenly spaced vertical lines starting at the top. The slip gravitated through the manganese before it rested at the base of the interior. This technique created a feathered and undulating pattern on the interior of the bowl. The rim was decorated with a sine wave pattern made with green slip trailing. Two thin white bands of slip make concentric circles on the interior center of the bowl. The bowl has lead glaze on the interior and on the rim. This piece is attributed to the Hagerstown area based on the colors of the slips, the slip patterns, and the shape of the bowl.
