Description
DESCRIPTION: Gateleg table with two half circle drop leaves with barrel joints; drawer on one end with wooden knob pull; block and column leg with flared feet; box-stretcher with beaded molding; gate-stretchers mortised through posts.

RELATED OBJECTS: The MESDA Object Database has records of two other gateleg tables from eastern Maryland that share similar characteristics, such as the shape of the turned columns and the “Spanish” or “Brush” feet (Refer to MESDA research files S-8667 and NN-1150).

The feet of this table echo the “Spanish” or “Brush” feet seen on chairs and tables from the first part of the eighteenth century, particularly in New England. On this table they demonstrate a simplified stylistic holdover from an earlier tradition.

History
Recorded by MESDA’s Maryland field research and later acquired by Frank L. Horton. The table came from the estate of David M. Perine (1796-1882) of “Homeland,” Baltimore County, MD.
