Here Welfare focuses on the approach to Salem from the north.  He places the viewer in the center of Main Street looking south.  The church and the large brick house, built in 1802 by Dr. Benjamin Vierling can be seen on the next block.  Barely visible at the end of Main Street are trees surrounding the town square.
