In 1680 Thomas Ashe, clerk on the ship Richmond, set sail for Carolina. He returned to England in 1682 and published an account of what he saw. Ashe described how “at Carolina they have lately invented a way of making with (corn) good sound Beer… when duly fermented, a strong Spirit like Brandy may be drawn off from it, by the help of an Alembick.” In other words, they had invented moonshine.
