Lightweight, stackable, and durable, silver beakers and tumblers were well-suited for use in the field.  The diarist Samuel Peyps records that he traveled with two silver tumblers so as to always have an appropriate cup to drink from.  This historical association of silver cups with the out-of-doors probably accounts for their modern association with horse racing.
