SALVER
Alexander Petrie (c. 1707 - 1768) and Shop
1750 - 1760
Charleston, South Carolina
Silver
DIA: 7 1/8", DOA: 1 1/2"
Gift of Frank L. Horton (acc. 2024.48)
For many years the source for MESDA’s logo, this small Petrie salver has a scalloped edge with alternating large and small shells in a piecrust edge that was cast separately and soldered in place. Three cast cabriole legs and hoof feet raise the tray to prevent any hot objects placed on the salver from scorching or otherwise damaging the furniture underneath. Generally, salvers were used as table dishes for dining or holding drinks. MESDA’s salver is engraved with the wolf-head crest of Henry Bailey of Edisto Island, South Carolina.
