Born in the Cherokee country of East Tennessee, Major Ridge was one of the prominent Cherokee chiefs at the time of their removal to Oklahoma. An advocate of westernization, Ridge sent his some John to be educated at the Movavian mission in Springplace, Georgia, and two of his daughters to the Salem Academy in North Carolina.
