This wide-mouthed stoneware jar bears the mark of Benjamin Beard, a member of Guilford County’s Quaker potting community.  A member of Deep River Monthly Meeting, Beard was born in 1775 and practiced the ceramic trade for nearly five decades before his death in 1841.  Two decoratively incised rings around the upper body augment the stamped mark that proclaims “Benjamin Beard, Guilford County, NC.”
