An unknown carpenter working on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, probably of English extraction, produced this blanket chest with wainscot panel construction that harkens back to the joined furniture made in Virginia during the seventeenth century.  Relying on his natural environment, this unknown maker utilized native yellow pine to fabricate the chest and selected a paint scheme with bright blues and reds and white and black highlights to satisfy the aesthetic needs of his customer.
