John P. Schermerhorn was a potter trained in New York and New Jersey stoneware traditions who came to Richmond around 1814 to work for Benjamin DuVal (1765 - 1826). Schermerhorn opened his own pottery around 1817 and worked until his death in 1837. While the vast majority of Schermerhorn stoneware is unsigned, many uniquely decorated objects can be attributed to his manufactory based on their relationship to this signed example. This work is comparable to contemporary decorated stonework from New England and the mid-Atlantic region.
