Research on Alexandria and Baltimore stoneware manufactories has benefited from the survival of many signed objects, which serve as keystones for attributions. The meticulous incised designs and precise application of cobalt on this pitcher link it to Henry Remmey Sr., a master potter whose stamp “H. REMMEY BALTIMORE” appears on a similar example. This example was probably made by Remmey around 1820 when he worked at the Baltimore Stoneware Manufactory operated at the time by Jacob Myers (ca. 1759 – 1821).
